My pet is dying
The death of a beloved pet affects us deeply. We become aware of the gaping hole in our lives in so many moments: our daily routine changes and we miss the cuddles and unconditional love that we shared with our pet. Our love for and life with our pet shapes our existence and makes us richer. If tears flow at this difficult time, it is totally normal and shows how much we loved our pet.
Coming to terms with the reality of our pet’s life and death is a major challenge. We wish that our pet would be by our side forever. But because saying goodbye is a painful time, it can be very helpful to discuss certain questions with family members ahead of time.
The following questions may be helpful:
- If we help our pet die, where will this happen? Will I go to the vet or will the vet come to our home?
- Who can support us? Who would like to say goodbye?
- Should other pets living in the same household be able to say goodbye?
- Do I want to keep my pet’s body at home for a short period?
- What should happen to the body after my pet’s death? What are the options in Switzerland?
Trust your inner voice and follow your heart. You will find the way that is right for you.

The final journey
What other options are there besides cremation?
Public rendering service
Bodies of animals weighing up to 200 kg can be taken to public rendering collection points – plus any waste from slaughtering animals and game. The contents of the collection points are transferred to disposal facilities in Lyss or Bazenheid, where the bodies and waste are processed into animal fat and meal. The animal meal mostly serves as an alternative fuel (e.g. in the cement industry) and biodiesel can be obtained from the animal fat.
Your garden
Individual animals weighing up to 10 kg may be buried in your garden. The body must be buried at least two metres above the groundwater level and covered with a layer of earth that is at least 1.2 metres thick. However, animals must not be buried near water sources or drinking water reservoirs – i.e. in groundwater protection zones and areas.
Pet cemeteries
Animals buried at pet cemeteries may weigh over 10 kg. Graves here can be designed individually. Collective graves and anonymous graves are also offered. The ashes of the animals can also be buried in urn graves.
